This self portrait was painted from self observation in the mirror. I began at a difficult time. My 24 year relationship with the father of my children was coming to an end, and I had been through the long period of Melbournes covid 19 lockdowns isolated at home. At first I could not recognise myself. Over a period of a year, and much self healing, the portrait developed in a way that marked an experience of self recognition and recreation. Here is a video of progress shots that share the journey.

I am quite interested in studio paintings as a sub genre of the still life. Like a domestic subject for a still life, the studio space is intimate and the objects in my studio are personally used in the day to day activities of my life. This studio still life records the busy and transient life of my desk distilled. I painted it as I found it. I also allowed my energy levels and clarity of observation to be marked in all it's inconsistency.
